Paris, chez la veuve de Claude Barbin, 1705. 12mo. (12),167 pp. Numerous woodcut illustrations of playing cards on pp. 82–100. Worn contemporary marbled calf with raised bands, richly gilt-decorated spine, dark red morocco label, gilt board edges, and speckled edges. Front free endpaper removed. Rather soiled and stained from heavy use, especially towards the end. A three cm tear in the outer margin of the title page. The final leaf with a paper loss to the upper margin. Various ink scribbles on the pastedowns. The final blank bears an early manuscript note stating, among other things, that this book is now the best in this genre. Ownership inscriptions ”A. Horn” on the front pastedown and ”v. Rosenstein” on the title page. From Ericsberg.

1966. Hand-painted title page & 50 mixed-media paintings. 32.5 × 33.5 cm. Housed in a contemporary cloth-covered ring binder with the title ”Ringen 1968” written in very faint pencil on the spine. Nearly all paintings have pencil captions beneath them, mostly in German but a few in Swedish. An unknown number of paintings are missing. Following the title page and the first unpaginated painting (titled ”Urtillstånd” [Primordial State]) are paintings numbered in pencil in the upper outer corner as follows: 1–4, 6–8, 10–16, 18–24, 26–28, 30–32, 35–37, 39–55 (the last titled ”Kosmos erlösning” [Redemption of the Cosmos]), followed by two unnumbered paintings. Thus, eight paintings are missing from the continuous sequence. The cloth binder is very lightly soiled. The paintings themselves are in fine condition, though the wide margins surrounding them are somewhat soiled in places, with occasional paper damage and slightly bumped corners. There is some faint offsetting of the paint onto the facing blank pages.

The map in volume 1 with a small tear in one of the folds. Included is a small bookmarker with a woodcut of a rooster and the printed text ”Virginia tobacco, London” from an 18th century tobacco company.On the insides of the front boards the old numbering ”423” and ink initials ”D.G.H.” Nice copy, from Ericsberg.
