HERBST René, Boutiques et magasins. AIA n°8.

Paris, Charles Moreau. Publisher’s portfolio, 33.5 x 25.5 cm. 4 ffnch & 48 plates, including 7 stencils (pochoirs). Portfolio soiled. Numerous pictures of shops in Berlin in the 1920's and 30's. René Herbst, a French architect and interior designer, was one of the co-founders of the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) in 1921 and a leading figure in Modern Art. He was highly active in the industrialisation of furniture, driven by a social vision aimed at making art accessible to as many people as possible. An advocate of metal and glass furniture, a designer of exhibition displays and shop windows, and the inventor of the ‘Sandow’ chair, he was also one of the first to use moulded wood in furniture. This portfolio is replete with examples of German modernist buildings that no longer exist. It features works by: Bouchet, Brinkman & van der Vlught, Buys (Volharding co-operative), Chareau (façade project in Paris), Churchill (Weyhe bookshop in New York), Djo Bourgeois, Docker (Luz department store in Stuttgart), van Doesburg (Aubette café and cinema in Strasbourg), Fahrenkamp (Palast Hotel Breidenbacher), Falke (Leibnizkeks shop in Berlin), Firle (Grunfeld shop in Berlin), Fischer, Grimm (Wasmuth bookshop in Berlin), Fuchs, René-Herbst (Siegel shop in Paris), Herre (record shop in Stuttgart), Hirschel-Protsch (Grumberg shop in Breslau), Jourdain (exhibition stand), Krejar, Kroha (pavilion), Le Corbusier and Jeanneret (façade and details of a demountable pavilion), Loos (interior of the Knise shop in Paris), Lurçat (Barbazanges Gallery in Paris), Luckhardt & Anker (commercial building and shop in Berlin), Mallet-Stevens (Bally shop in Paris and design), Nicolas, Oud (temporary café), Pniewsky & Sienicki (exhibition doors and shop in Warsaw), Ponti & Lancia (perfume shop in Milan), Rading (pharmacy in Breslau), Rietveld (shops in Utrecht), Siclis (Isabey perfume shop, with chairs and tables by René-Herbst), Spalek and Straumer (Israel shop in Berlin), Stynen (façade of the van der Elst shop in Brussels), Van Tonderen (American House shop in Brussels), von Wersin (Art Décoratif exhibition hall), Wiederanders (newspaper kiosk in Munich, shop, pavilions at the Munich exhibition), Zucker (Leiser shop in Berlin) Lamond 288.
